Mother of pearl and gouache fan “gallantries in the 16 ThC”

Mother-of-pearl and gouache fan. The leaf is made of paper lined with kid’s skin. It is hand painted of a superb scene representing characters in the sixteenth century (around 1570 according to the costumes), in the park of a castle. The woman at the center of the stage, to whom a young man offers a flower, has a hawk on his arm. Company lady, children, dogs and couples of gallant complete the scene. Magnificent mother-of-pearl frame, gold-plated. In its box “Mrs. Elise, 170 Regent Street, London”. This house, best known for the manufacture and sale of prestigious dresses in the late nineteenth century, also sold some luxurious accessories like this fan. This fan is in perfect condition, almost like new. Some wear on the box.
